The White Buffalo Treatment Centre leadership team came to us with a list of needs and a near-impossible timeline. 3twenty was up for the challenge on this unique design-build project.

Project Summary

The White Buffalo Treatment Centre (WBTC) is designed to meet the needs of Indigenous female youth, who are involved with drugs, alcohol and inhalant misuse. The program is based on a holistic treatment model using four cornerstones of treatment: spiritual, emotional, physical and mental. Previously based in another First Nation community, the WBTC had to relocate to a new facility without a lot of warning. Given the special requirements of a treatment centre, it was impossible for the organization  to find an existing building to move into. After seeing the work we did with school divisions, the Executive Director and her team approached 3twenty to do a full design-build on a new facility.

3twenty’s design team worked with the WBTC leadership to understand the needs of their staff and clients. Based on the discussions, 3twenty developed a design that offered 10 private bedrooms for clients, classroom space, living areas, dining hall, smudge room, and office space for staff. It was designed to feel comfortable and safe.

Built: 2018

Building heated using a boiler system connected to individual HVAC units in each client bedroom.

Integrated anti-ligature hardware throughout the building as required.

Fully integrated security, access control and fire alarm system. All activity can be monitored through a central control centre.
