Explore ProjectThe Buffalo River Dene Nation Youth Centre is a vibrant and multifunctional space designed to empower the Nation's youth and celebrate community connection, culture, and growth.
Project Summary
Buffalo River Dene Nation takes pride in its tight-knit community and strong commitment to traditional ways of living, while also embracing future growth. The Nation values opportunities that bring community members together and give youth meaningful experiences. These experiences help them connect with their language, culture, and traditions. To support this vision, the community dreamed of a space that could foster these opportunities. 3twenty was honored to collaborate with BRDN to design and build a youth center that reflects their aspirations.
Chief and Council envisioned a multifunctional space where youth and community members could gather, create, and learn together. They wanted to blend recreational and educational spaces to support skill development in music, art, fitness, and traditional teachings. At the same time, the space needed to function as a venue for community events.
The design includes a large flex space with mobile furniture, a projector, and a screen. This setup allows the room to transform easily for different uses, from educational workshops to community gatherings. A dedicated craft room provides generous storage and workspace. As a result, it encourages creativity through group activities, classes, and independent projects. The vibrant music room features acoustic enhancements and invites exploration and self-expression.
To support staff and community operations, the building includes a separate office and boardroom wing. These spaces provide functional work areas adjacent to the shared spaces. In addition, a fitness center supports both group and individual fitness activities. The gym is accessible from inside the building and through a separate after-hours entrance.
