Explore ProjectAfter a devastating fire in 2019, Chief and Council of Cumberland House Cree Nation knew they had no choice but to build new.
Project Summary
On December 2nd, 2019 tragedy struck as the Cumberland House Cree Nation Band Office burned to the ground. With the fire, irreplaceable historical data, traditional land use maps, and photographs were all lost. Cumberland House Chief and Council vowed to rebuild as soon as possible and promised to provide an even better facility. From the very first meetings, Chief Rene Chaboyer knew there was no point in going elsewhere – they were going to rebuild with 3twenty.
Cumberland House Chief and Council went into the building process with an open mind. Their main focus – to build something their people could be proud of. The 3twenty team quickly got to work and in a matter of months, the construction process began. Working together with local Cumberland House community members, the new band office was assembled, and a new sense of hope for the future was born.
The revamped band office is two storeys, 15,458 square feet, high-performance, and energy-efficient, placed with views of the South Saskatchewan River and the entire Cumberland House community. It includes 44 offices, several meeting and training spaces, staff facilities, and daycare facilities. The new building requires little energy for heating with a highly insulated envelope, triple pane windows, exceptional mechanical design, and a wood pellet furnace, making it one of the most high-performance commercial buildings in Northern Saskatchewan.
3twenty was able to complete this project on time and budget, allowing the Chief and Council to keep their promise and provide community members with a band office they can enjoy visiting and appreciate for decades.
