Explore ProjectAfter a devastating fire in 2019, Chief and Council of Cumberland House Cree Nation knew they had no choice but to build new.
Project Summary
On December 2, 2019, tragedy struck when a fire destroyed the Cumberland House Cree Nation Band Office. Along with the building, the fire claimed irreplaceable historical data, traditional land use maps, and photographs. Cumberland House Chief and Council vowed to rebuild as soon as possible and committed to delivering an even better facility. From the very first meetings, Chief Rene Chaboyer knew there was no need to look elsewhere. The community would rebuild with 3twenty.
Chief and Council approached the building process with an open mind. Above all, they wanted to create a space their people could be proud of. The 3twenty team began work quickly, and construction followed within months. By working alongside local Cumberland House community members, the project took shape. Through this collaboration, the new band office came together and helped restore a renewed sense of hope for the future.
The revitalized band office spans two storeys and measures 15,458 square feet. It features a high-performance, energy-efficient design and overlooks the South Saskatchewan River and the broader Cumberland House community. Inside, the building includes 44 offices, multiple meeting and training spaces, staff facilities, and daycare space. A highly insulated building envelope, triple-pane windows, advanced mechanical systems, and a wood pellet furnace significantly reduce heating demands. As a result, the building stands as one of the most high-performance commercial facilities in Northern Saskatchewan.
3twenty completed the project on time and on budget. This achievement allowed Chief and Council to honour their promise and provide a band office that community members can enjoy and take pride in for decades to come.
