Explore Project3twenty was proud to design and build an important transitional housing project in Saskatoon as part of the National Housing Strategy's Rapid Housing Initiative.
Project Summary
3twenty was proud to once again partner with Saskatoon Tribal Council and its affordable housing arm, Cress Housing Corporation. Together, the team delivered this important project with funding support from the National Housing Strategy (NHS). Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, and the City of Saskatoon provided this funding.
As part of the NHS, the Rapid Housing Initiative supports the delivery of affordable housing. Specifically, the program focuses on people and populations who are vulnerable within the Greater Saskatoon Area. Through this initiative, the new building will support Indigenous women transitioning out of incarceration. The project forms part of STC’s community-based reintegration program, Īkwēskīcik iskwēwak.
Īkwēskīcik iskwēwak means “turning their lives around” in Cree. Through this program, 18 women will gain access to essential services. These services include mental health and addiction support. In addition, participants will have opportunities for education and employment. They will also have access to Elders and support while working to regain custody of their children. STC recognizes the need for more spaces for women after release. Therefore, the organization hopes this program and facility will serve as a starting point for building trust, relationships, and long-term stability.
The two-storey, high-performance facility is located in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood of Saskatoon. The 13,675-square-foot building includes 18 bedroom units. It also provides cultural and programming space to support tenants. In addition, the facility includes offices and meeting spaces for staff. High-performance features include a highly insulated building envelope and triple-pane windows. The building also incorporates an efficient mechanical design. As a result, these features help reduce long-term operational costs.
